The foundation for our success is an effective synergy between excellent engineering skills, outstanding software development, visionary robotics and sophisticated IT: the perfect environment for all visionaries of digitalization.

1. Why are we back at the Hackathon Stuttgart?

As a market leader in automation technologies we at Festo are always seeking for new and innovative solutions.

Hackathons create a perfect setting for us to get in touch with experts from a wide variety of industries, ambitious students and young talents.

At last year’s Hackathon in Stuttgart we were impressed by the knowledge as well as the passion of all participants to work on the solution until the last minute. It was really inspiring to see all these teams achieving great results by working in a very fast and agile way. In addition to very good contacts, we took a lot of inspiration and some interesting impulses with us.

2. What are our expectations?

We are looking forward to meeting curious minds, hackers and geeks who are full of ideas how to automate the world of the future! We expect a great atmosphere, passionate developers, creative solutions, interesting contacts, a valuable exchange and above all: fun to participate!

Technologies to work with

For the second time Festo will participate at Hackathon-Stuttgart. We are excited to offer you a fun challenge with our components. Normally you find Festo products in such different industry segments as Automotive Industry, Electronics and Assembly, Food & Beverage, Packaging and Process Automation. This year we have decided to present you a completely different application.

You will experience a whole new way of flying.

Motion EFX Seat from MediaMation

With the Motion EFX Seat from MediaMation enabled by Festo components, Samsung Gear VR headsets, and the DJI Tello drone, you can feel the drone movements as if you were flying.

You need to combine traditional automation devices like our Festo Motion Terminal ™ with modern multimedia and serious toys. Just the Festo way.

You will develop a virtual real-time flight where you have the feeling that you are in the air. With the real-time flight data video stream of the drones you program the 4D seats to move according to the movements of the drones. The video is displayed on a screen or VR headset.

The drones can be programmed with an SDK and the flight data can be read from the drone:

Robotino®:  Mobile Robot platform for Education and Research

At Festo we take the necessity for lifelong learning seriously. With our Didactic division we strife to develop learning systems and concepts to a global audience for more than 50 years. Already 13 years ago we started to ship our Mobile Robot platform for Education and Research: Robotino®. With this we provide a robotics platform that is as accessible and open as possible.

We identify and abstract industrial concepts and make them accessible for vocational and academic education. Robotino provides all interfaces expected from an AGV/AMR deployed in industrial use cases. With examples, but no proprietary software we allow our users full access down to the hardware level of our omnidirectional drive. Just a few weeks ago we have started to ship Robotino 4 – with a slew of new features we would like you to put to the test including an Intel stereo camera.

Our suggested challenges will require you to either focus on integrating software components to enable possible IoT/AI scenarios, or to focus on integrating additional industrial hardware and other components into an application.

Robotino runs on Ubuntu 18.04 and provides several API’s including REStful, as well as packages to ROS, Matlab and other major platforms. All can be accessed and prepared here:
